Healthy eating means reaching for “whole foods.” I’m talking about food sourced from your vendor of choice, from farmers to grocery stores, and not just the shop with the clever name. Oh, and in my opinion: The produce aisle is stronger than the supplement aisle.
But when I want heart-friendly polyphenols, I reach for a bottle… of extra virgin olive oil. Shopping for the best EVOO means walking out of my supermarket to connect with a specialist at VSOP Taproom, with its gourmet oils, flavored balsamic vinegars, uncommon wines with beautiful labels and other gifts.
Speaking of wine…
While you’re chatting with your doctor or researching polyphenols’ potential contributions to cardiovascular health and reduced inflammation, check out resveratrol, a type of polyphenol found in a variety of foods as well as red wines.
Even if you’re not thinking about physical health, finding tasty gifts for people you love, including yourself, can be an act of heart-expanding joy.
Mild, medium or robust?
A place like VSOP Taproom expands your senses through the nuances of premium, varietal EVOO. Each oil has its own color, aroma and mouthfeel. Some oils are quiet, asking for salads. Others are robust, perhaps even peppery. (My favorites, including the bossy, polyphenol-packed Kalamata, might make you cough if they hit your throat unaccompanied by a bit of bread sprinkled with parmesan.)
We can eat as a simple biological function, an act of consumption similar to refueling a car. Or, we can slow down to experience and appreciate what our tastebuds and bodies enjoy. How do we feel when we’re eating? How do we feel when we’ve finished? Simple, high-quality ingredients elevate dinners and spirits.
As I wrote in a post about eating well, “What we eat becomes us.”
When I lived in Georgia, I loved walking into VSOP Taproom in Norcross or Leaning Ladder in downtown Woodstock. If you can’t find a similar specialist in your town, I’ll share another one of my joys: free shipping of an expertly-packed $100 box of treats and gifts from VSOP Taproom. (Check the banner at the top of the homepage to see if this offer is still in effect.) Oh, and although I look forward to purchasing more Kalamata oil if it’s still in stock for my next order, I’ll whisper to readers this fierce, decadent oil is worth its higher price tag. Every penny.
Happy Holidays, y’all!
